Things about car oil seals

Release Time:

Sep 14,2023

Seals on cars include sealing strips used to seal doors (all doors), windows (front and rear windshields, side windows), covers (engine hood, trunk lid), and seals used to seal oil spills. The various sealing rings (oil seals) and various gaskets in the gaps may seem inconspicuous, but if they are missing, they may be fatal.

1. The felt oil seal is soaked in lubricating oil and installed with appropriate pre-tightening force.

Felt oil seals are usually installed at the front and rear ends of the engine and the rear axle.

If the lubricating oil is not soaked, the annular oil seal installed on the rotating part is likely to generate high temperature due to dry friction between the felt and the journal, and the sealing performance will fail; while for the strip felt installed in the flat groove, it is likely that the sealing performance will fail. It shrinks due to a large amount of lubricating oil absorption, resulting in loose sealing.

Moreover, the felt oil seal must be installed with appropriate pre-tightening force. Under normal circumstances, the size before installation is 1/4~1/3 larger than the size after installation. If it is too large, the elasticity of the felt oil seal will be reduced and the sealing effect will be reduced. Deterioration, and it is easy to be damaged prematurely due to overheating; too small, the permeability cannot be fully exerted, and oil leakage is easy.

Once the parts with the felt oil seal are disassembled and installed, be sure to check the elasticity of the felt oil seal when reinstalling it. If it does not meet the requirements, replace it in time. Don't ignore it just because it looks new.

2. Use special installation tools to install the skeleton oil seal in the specified direction.

Skeleton oil seals are used in engine crankshafts, transmissions, differentials, shock absorbers, engines, axles and other parts.

When installing, the lip of the skeleton oil seal should face the oil storage side, and be sure to avoid installing it crookedly or hitting its surface with tools such as hammers. Otherwise, it may cause leakage due to improper installation or damage due to hitting.

If there is no special installation tool, just like wearing a bracelet on your hand, you can first wrap the part to be installed with cellophane (hard plastic film), then apply a little lubricant, and then push the skeleton oil seal inward from the shaft head evenly and slowly , and then pull out the cellophane after installing it.

Generally, when the lip of the skeleton oil seal is damaged, cracked, or oily and corroded, it must be replaced.

The seals are not large and relatively cheap, but if they are allowed to be damaged and not replaced in time, they may cause great safety hazards. For example, once the O-shaped water blocking ring installed on the cylinder liner is damaged, a large amount of coolant in the water jacket will "take advantage" of the leakage and enter the crankcase, and the lubricating oil inside will inevitably be contaminated. The consequences can be imagined.
